Review: Cafe Dominique

Last Sunday, the three of us stumbled upon a quaint cafe, called Cafe Dominique, along Examiner Street in Quezon City. V and I hadn't had lunch yet then, so we stopped by to try their food

Cafe Dominique's interiors are pleasant; an open space with wood panels and white walls, adorned with green plants (albeit plastic) makes the place look inviting. The cashier area at one end hides the kitchen.

We arrived at the cafe mid-afternoon, so there were only a couple of tables occupied. After being seated (and Munchkin given a seat booster), we perused their menu.

Cafe Dominique's offerings are mostly "comfort food", with soups, pastas and rice meals in the menu. The prices range from about 175 PHP to 300 PHP, if I am not mistaken. I wanted to sample most of their food. But because they only accepted cash payments at the time of our visit, I just opted for their all-day breakfast tapsilog.

V ordered their Spanish omelette, but asked the server to have the bacon removed. We also ordered a side of steamed rice, as well as "fresh beans", which were actually just raw French beans dusted with salt.

The food was alright. The beef tapa was cut into thin slivers and was tender enough. Its sweet-salty flavor went well with the rice. The tomato and onion salad complemented the tapa, providing a fresh break from the oil. The eggs were cooked with the yolk still runny, and I liked that. Serving-wise, the tapsilog was just good for one person. This tapa reminded me of Banapple's tapsilog, and between the two, I'd choose the one from Banapple.

V's Spanish omelette looked good, though I didn't taste it anymore. The only problem with his order was, it still had pork. In the form of ham. When we asked the server about it, he brought the omelette to the kitchen, only to bring it back to us, kasi hindi naman daw bacon. They didn't offer to just replace the omelette, or even scrape the ham bits off of it. So V begrudgingly raked off the contents of his omelette, and just ate the egg.

We had to follow up on the steamed rice, too, since nobody from the staff checked if our order was already complete. And when V asked the server why she didn't tell him that the omelette contained ham, she just smiled and shrugged and said she didn't know.

Overall, I don't think I'd be visiting Cafe Dominique anytime soon. The food was just okay, nothing special. But even more so, the service was disappointing.

When we visited the cafe, they only accepted cash payments.
